Pre-Surgery Instructions
Please be sure to read our Pre-Surgery Instructions at least 24 hours before your pet's procedure for important information on preparing your pet for surgery. Please remember: No food or water after midnight on the day of your pet's surgery or surgical procedure. Also, please print out and complete the Surgery/Anesthesia Consent Form prior to your arrival.
Post-Surgery Care
Depending on the type of surgery performed, your pet may need special care from you during the days following the procedure. Your veterinarian will provide and review with you any post-operative care instructions to help your pet recuperate fully and as quickly as possible.
Overnight Observation
For major surgeries and some procedures, like declawing, overnight observation of your pet will be necessary. Your
pet can be hospitalized for recovery and monitoring at the Animal Emergency Care Clinic, located only a few blocks away from our animal hospital.
Accu Vet Laser Surgery
Our advanced Accu Vet Laser unit has become the surgical tool of choice for many of the surgeries performed at Hillcrest. Highly recommended by our veterinarians, laser surgeries offer reduced pain, less bleeding, less swelling and significantly faster recovery than traditional scalpel surgeries at minimal extra cost.
Ask if laser surgery is an option for your pet’s surgical procedure. If it is, ask about the many advantages this safe alternative offers your pet. |

Scheduling Surgeries
No appointment is necessary for most surgeries and surgical procedures. Simply bring your pet in between 7:00 and 9:00 a.m., we will perform the surgery during the day, and your pet will be ready to go home with you between 4:00 and 6:00 p.m.
Advanced appointments are needed for major surgeries, such as orthopedic (bone) surgeries, oral surgeries, and soft tissue procedures, as well as for cosmetic ear surgeries. You are always welcome, of course, to call and schedule an appointment.
Surgery
Our surgical area is equipped to handle virtually any type of surgery on any type of pet, and our veterinarians are too. No other veterinarian or veterinary clinic in the greater Rockford area performs near the range of surgeries as Hillcrest, nor the number of surgeries per year.
If you will be bringing your pet in for surgery, please read the Pre-Surgery Instructions sheet and print out and sign the Anesthesia Form.
Depending on the surgery performed, some pets will be able to go home the evening of their surgery. Often, however, we will keep recuperating pets overnight for observation. Please follow your veterinarian's advice after surgery to ensure a quick recovery for your pet.
Out-Patient Surgical Procedures
You are welcome to bring your pet in any weekday morning between 7 and 9 a.m. for "routine" surgical procedures like laser skin tag removals, ear flushings, dentals, etc. In some situations we can perform the procedure while you wait. However, most surgeries go home between 4 and 6 p.m. the same day.
We do recommend that you read the Pre-Surgery Instructions sheet at least 24 hours before your surgery in case any of the instructions apply. Many of the minor surgical procedures are ideal for laser surgery. Ask your veterinarian if laser surgery would be a better choice. |
